The authors of a forthcoming book on sports cards are requesting the help of collectors in searching for an image of a new hockey card being released by Upper Deck.
The book, tentatively titled “The Top 100 Sports Cards of All-Time”, will not only feature the best offerings from the hobby, but also shine the spotlight on some of the worst cards ever produced.
As soon as authors Jon Waldman and Stephen Laroche saw the preview image, they knew that the new Johnny Weir card, set for release by The Upper Deck Company in the second series of its flagship Upper Deck brand, was to be an instant addition to the “blunders” list.
"This card has already caused a major buzz among hockey card collectors, and it's not a positive one," said Laroche. "Whether it is collectors that object to the fact that figure skaters are included in a hockey card release or they have an objection over the unwise photo selection; there are sure to be many groans of disgust when these cards are pulled. As our book will show, any manufacturer can be prone to an occasional missteps but it is also important to celebrate the industry's successes as well."
“Upper Deck has made some great cards throughout the years, as you’ll see in our list, but there are also some cards that are head-scratchers,” Waldman remarked. “The Weir is an instant classic…though not necessarily for the right reasons.”
Both authors are now seeking help from collectors to add this card to their book, and are offering a reward for its finding.
Collectors who pull the card are asked to send a high resolution scan of the card (minimum 300 dots per inch), along with a photo of them holding the card, to info@ecwpress.com. The first collector to send images that meet these qualifications will receive a notation in “The Top 100 Sports Cards of All-Time”, as well as a copy of the book upon release in Spring 2011 and their choice of a recently-published ECW Press book. New titles can be found at http://www.ecwpress.com.
“The Top 100 Sports Cards of All-Time” examines the greatest cards ever produced, including pieces of all-time great athletes Mickey Mantle, Bobby Orr, Peyton Manning and Michael Jordan.
“The Top 100 Sports Cards of All-Time” is being published by Toronto’s ECW Press and will be released in the Spring of 2011.
